Lost: Empty notebook. Lead pencil found.

This one's interesting. I wonder if the character originally lost both his notebook and his lead pencil, and this is his second note, alerting people that, "Okay, I found my pencil, but I'm still missing my notebook, so keep an eye out for it. Thanks."

Or, I wonder if he found someone else's pencil right around the time that he lost his notebook. If that's the case, there's a great sense of balance in this story: He's lost one thing but found another thing, and both of those things go so well with one another -- the pencil and a notebook.

I also wonder about this cat's attachment to the notebook. I mean, if it's "empty" (which I assume means, without stories, poems, odes, and the like), why not just forget about it and get a new notebook? Maybe the notebook was leather-bound? Maybe it was a gift? Maybe the guy is just the ultimate procrastinator, and he's using his lost notebook as an excuse not to write?
