Perhaps I've been reading too much Cormac McCarthy lately, but when I read this, my first reaction was that JWS was describing a woman who had died in a fire. Her skin, charred as black as a cocktail dress, was smoking, and she was helpless because she needed none; she was gone.
Then I pictured a woman newly widowed and grieving.
